We’re not much of a gifting couple. We like to give, sure, and we like to receive, sure, but we never really want anything. Not really want, anyway. Partly because we’ve never lost that poor mindset of counting coins (which makes sense – we’re still not that far off the national poverty line). Partly because everything we really do want is too expensive for a gift of any sort. Generally we’re too busy trying to catch up on bills and some sort of financial buffer (which never reaches very far before its blown on Christmas, moving or some other event or emergency) to do any serious buying. We’re masters of the dollar stores and avid supporters of the Chinese economy.
Jenn’s definitely not high maintenance. She doesn’t wear much jewelry, doesn’t like many flowers, and really only drains the bank in the craft stores – where she can get carried away sometimes. Me, I don’t want a fruit bowl unless its hand-carved crystal (or somehow takes my interest), I don’t want a watch unless its a feature-filled $200 Casio (solar powered, barometer and a digital compass, say whaat?), or a $300 Citizen or Seiko. If you’re going to get something good, why not make it something you’re comfortable keeping for the next 40 years? So as a result I don’t generally get much for myself.
This Christmas – since decent sized doll houses are over $400 (and against house rules, not that they’re followed anyway) and a potter’s wheels are around $600 at the very cheapest – we bought each other a pair of Docs. Yeah, its pretty clear what stage of development we’re stuck at. We’re totally thrilled.
So, while I wait for a free treadmill to show up on Craigslist for my nefarious plans to build a potter’s wheel and look for a suitable block of wood to carve a kantele out of… we’ll be stomping around in style this winter!
Awesome.

well done, masters of the dollar store!
